Perfect for crochet beginners! It's pretty simple, using slip stitch, half double crochet (increasing and decreasing), and the tapestry crochet technique. I've added links to tutorials explaining most techniques.

I'd recommend using cotton yarn for this project, because it's lightweight and absorbent, making it perfect for protecting surfaces from spills and scratches. It also blocks well and stays flat when in use. I used DROPS Paris, but any 100% cotton yarn should work.

Please note that consistent tension is important for this project, as you'll want your coasters to lie flat once finished. If you're not familiar with the stitches used in this project (half double crochet and slip stitch), I'd recommend practising beforehand. Don't stress if your tension isn't perfect: if you block your coasters after making them, they should stay flat. Find blocking instructions at the end of the pattern.
