In this pattern, I have paired nice thick, cushiony yarn with a well-defined stitch and hope it brings you warm feelings. For yarn choice, I love Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Re-Spun Thick & Quick, or a Super Bulky cotton or cotton blend. You could even use macrame cord. Whatever it is, make sure it's machine washable if you are planning to use it around food and drinks.

Gauge is not crucial to this project. There are instructions in the pattern for stripes and a rectangular shape instead of a square, as well as a simple tutorial on fringe.
